The Liberal Democrat administration in Kingston Council have made a number of poor planning decisions which have annoyed residents. When there was an application by ASDA in Norbiton for an all night opening, the Liberal Liberal Democrat councillors were nowhere to be seen.
The Labour council candidates for Norbiton, Linsey Cottington, Sheila Griffin and Laurie South, are delighted to hear that ASDA has withdrawn the application made by the Norbiton ASDA for all night opening.
As soon as they heard about the application, the Labour candidates for the council visited all the adjoining streets to find out what local residents felt. The majority were totally against the application on the grounds that the noise of lorries and cars arriving all night was quite unacceptable. Labour candidates encouraged residents to put in their objections and showed many people how to go about this.
Linsey, Sheila and Laurie were appalled to learn that such a major change in use was going to be decided by officers and not by councillors. It appeared that the Liberal Democrat councillors did not care what residents felt or appeared to be totally unaware of the application.
However it appears the application has been withdrawn. Prompt action by Labour’s candidates obviously helped. However ASDA may decide to put in another application, so Labour’s team will be very vigilant.
